In challenging times, the strongest communities are the ones that support each other. At We Start Here, we begin right in our own backyard—South Orange/Maplewood (or SOMA, as locals call it!). Our approach is simple: partner with organizations that already have deep roots and meaningful connections in the community, and amplify the work they’re already doing.
We know one of the most powerful ways to support nonprofits is by increasing their funding. With more resources, organizations can hire talented staff and provide the highest level of service and care. But raising money is hard work, and too often, nonprofits spend so much time fundraising that it diverts focus from their mission. That’s where we step in.
We design bespoke, accessible events for partner organizations—fun, inclusive gatherings where every dollar goes directly to the cause. These aren’t expensive galas; they’re experiences that bring people together, foster excitement, and prevent donor fatigue. The charity impact is real, immediate, and tangible.
Our ultimate goal is sustainability. Each event is designed to eventually be taken over by the partner organization, becoming a recurring fundraiser they run independently. Over time, we step back while the impact grows—starting in SOMA, expanding through local and state chapters, and potentially scaling nationwide. We’re creating a ripple effect: stronger communities, thriving organizations, and a model for giving that starts here.
